Former international cricketers Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan have shared their thoughts on England batsman Joe Root breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most Test runs.
Michael Vaughan has backed Joe Root to become the leading run-scorer in Test cricket history in the coming years.
Joe Root currently sits seventh on the list of leading run-scorers in Test cricket. The right-handed batsman has scored 12,377 runs in 145 Tests at an average of 50.93, including 34 centuries and 64 half-centuries. He is the leading run-scorer among active cricketers in the longest international format.
Sachin Tendulkar has scored 15,921 runs in 200 Tests. Ricky Ponting is second with 13,378 runs, followed by Jacques Kallis (13,289), Rahul Dravid (13,288), Alastair Cook (12,472) and Kumar Sangakkara (12,400). Experts consider Joe Root to be the player most likely to break Tendulkar’s record.
I have no idea what Joe Root is.Petite likes it – Adam Gilchrist
Speaking to the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Adam Gilchrist said that he is not sure Joe Root will surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record. Gilchrist mentioned that Root is likely to step away from white-ball cricket soon.
-He’s a young man, isn’t he? I have no idea what his appetite is like. I mean, he’s clearly pretty hungry right now, but if you have the desire to move forward. It’s going to eliminate the white ball completely, isn’t it? “He’s had enough of it,” Gilchrist said.
Root scored 7,823 runs at an average of 47.99, with 17 centuries from his debut in December 2012 to the end of 2020. He has improved his form since the start of 2021, amassing 4,554 runs in 48 Test matches at an average of 56.92, including 17 centuries and a highest score of 228.
I’d be surprised if he didn’t – Michael Vaughan
During the same conversation, Michael Vaughan is confident that Joe Root will surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record. Vaughan highlighted Root’s passion, commitment and skill. He stated that he would be surprised if Root did not surpass Tendulkar in the list of elite batsmen.
“I think unless his back breaks, he’s the most enthusiastic lover of the game. I don’t think this is going to suddenly go away. “Obviously he had the cap to see that,” Vaughan said.
“It cost him a bit, but he’s obviously not involved in that anymore. He’s just a player, a hitter, who plays very well. He knows his game better than ever. I would be very surprised if he didn’t. I’ll be totally honest with you. But absolutely wobbly. “He’s playing wonderfully,” he added.
Root is currently 95 runs away from overtaking Alastair Cook to become England’s leading run-scorer in Tests. The 33-year-old is also 3,544 runs away from Tendulkar’s record. England have six Tests left this year. England will play three matches against Pakistan and three against New Zealand.
