Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah spoke about who will captain the team in the T20 World Cup 2024. He said there is no need for clarity now as there is still a lot of time left for the start of the competition.

The T20 World Cup 2024 is about 7 months away and we are still not sure who will captain the Indian team in the tournament. Regular captain Rohit Sharma has not played a single T20I since the T20 World Cup 2022 concluded and yet there is no sign of him in the format.

On the other hand, Hardik Pandya, who has captained the team in the absence of Rohit Sharma, is also injured and his return is also not certain. Jay Shah, while revealing that the all-rounder could return during the Afghanistan series, did not mention who will captain India in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Jay Shah said that they have not decided anything yet and will be monitoring things during the Afghanistan series and IPL 2024. Speaking on the sidelines of the Women’s Premier League auction, he explained (quoted by Indian Express):

“What is the need for clarity right now? (The T20 World Cup) starts in June, we have the IPL before that and the series against Afghanistan.”

Recently there were reports suggesting that the BCCI is willing to give leadership to Rohit Sharma for the T20 World Cup 2024. The Indian captain asked the governing body to take a call on his future and the board told him that they want him as skipper.

We have given the extension but are yet to finalize the contract: Jay Shah on Rahul Dravid-led coaching staff

Jay Shah also spoke about the future of the coaching staff led by Rahul Dravid. He admitted that they have been given an extension but have not yet signed the contract. He added that they will decide everything once the team returns from South Africa. He added:

“We didn’t have time for anything, they finished (with the World Cup), I had a meeting with them and we mutually agreed that they are going to continue. We will sit down and decide once they return from South Africa. “We have given the extension but we still have to finalize the contract.”

Rahul Dravid’s contract as head coach ended after the ICC World Cup 2023. However, he will coach the team in the upcoming tour of South Africa where India will play 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs and 2 Tests.
