The Zimbabwe national cricket team has achieved a sensational feat in the history of T20 cricket. The Sikander-led team has broken the team’s record for highest score in the shortest format of the game by putting up a tremendous effort with the bat on Wednesday (October 23).
The Zimbabwe national cricket team achieved the feat in the ongoing match against Gambia in the Africa Sub-Regional B Qualifier for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2024. The match between the two teams will take place at the Ruaraka Sports Club Ground, Nairobi.
Zimbabwe records a total of 344 runs in 20 overs
The Zimbabwe national cricket team won the toss and elected to bat first. They came out with all their weapons and attacked the Gambian players from the beginning. They finished with a total of 344 runs in 20 overs, surpassing Nepal’s total of 314 runs against Mongolia in 20 overs in 2023.
Opening batsmen Brian Bennet (50) and Tadiwanashe Marumani (62) start the proceedings at the top. They went crazy and reached fifty for the team in quick succession of time. They added 98 runs in just 5.4 overs and put pressure on the opposition.
Sikander Raza criticizes a brutal century
Dion Myers, who came out to bat at number 3, failed to set the stage on fire when he was back in the hut after scoring 12 runs in 5 balls. The real bombardment came from the bat of captain Sikander Raza, who continued his golden touch with the bat and made sure to cash in on the platform given by the openers.
The all-rounder scored a brutal century and made sure to take his team to the dominant position in the match. Raza remained unbeaten with 133 runs off 43 balls. He batted with a strike rate of 7 fours and 15 sixes and seemed to be in complete control.
Ryan Burl (25) and Clive Madane (53*) also supported captain Sikander Raza well. Based on the tremendous effort with the bat, the Zimbabwe national cricket team recorded a total of 344 runs. For Gambia, Andre Jarju picked two wickets while all the players were taken to the cleaners.
This was only the second time in the history of T20s Cricket that the 300-run mark was crossed. They and Nepal are now the only teams to have achieved the feat. India came close to achieving it but finished with a total of 297 runs in the recent T20I against Bangladesh.
