IPL Governing Council Chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed that the second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be held in February 2024. He also revealed that the BCCI is yet to take any decision on the venues for the competition. .
The first edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which is a league owned and operated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was held in 2023 and the Mumbai Indians won the inaugural season by defeating Delhi Capitals at the end.
The WPL 2023 was held entirely in Mumbai and some reports suggest that Bengaluru will host the second edition of the competition along with Mumbai.
Speaking to Sportstar, Arun Dhumal said that the officials will meet during the upcoming Women’s Premier League auction and take a decision on the venues.
“The WPL will be in February, so we will review the venues. Once we meet, probably during the WPL auctions, we will figure out where it makes the most sense to host the tournament, given the logistical challenges and time available. We will take a call in this regard,” Dhumal said.
If it is possible to host WPL in a multi-city format, that… – Arun Dhumal
Arun Dhumal further said that the fact that WPL 2024 will be held in a multi-city format will be good for the fans.
“If it is possible to host it in a multi-city format, it would be better for the fans and the franchises as there is a fan base. But it all depends on the time available and the logistical challenges,” he stated.
The IPL Governing Council chairman added that they will discuss the WPL venue issue with all the franchises before taking the final decision.
“We would definitely like the tournament to cover the geography of the entire country, given the diversity of our country. It’s a great opportunity for all franchises to interact with fans across this country. There are many stadiums and it would be great for fans to interact with female cricketers. Now that the franchises are clear, even they would be interested in having their games in their local centres,” Dhumal said.
“We will work with the franchises and see to what extent it is possible to organize matches there…”
The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 auction will take place on December 9 in Mumbai. A total of 165 cricketers will participate in the auction, of which 104 are Indians and 61 are foreign cricketers, among whom 15 are from Associated Nations.
