‘Wrong statement’: Former India player hits back at Rohit Sharma for defending Virat Kohli

Rohit Sharma recently defended Kohli for his struggles in Australia.

Former India captain and star batsman Virat Kohli has been struggling with the bat in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). Apart from his century in the series opener in Perth, Kohli managed scores of 5, 7, 11 and 3 in the other four innings he batted.

The main challenge in Kohli’s batting during this series has been his tendency to chase deliveries away from his off-stump, which led to his dismissals. He has consistently struggled to get the ball to the wicketkeeper or fielders, often while running cover or trying to get his bat away from pitches with extra bounce.

When pressed about the same in the pre-match conference of the Boxing Day Test, India captain Rohit Sharma gave his vote of confidence in Kohli to right his wrongs, stating that the “greats of today” They find their “own way.”

Sanjay Manjrekar hits back at Rohit Sharma

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, on the other hand, had a different opinion and suggested that Kohli would need help to solve his problem. He mentioned that if Rohit’s claim was true, Kohli would have already overcome his challenges.

Manjrekar highlighted the importance of the batting coach intervening to resolve these technical issues.

“Actually, that is a misstatement. And it has to be said. Let’s understand that a captain cannot go out and put more pressure on the batsman. So he said what he had to say at a press conference. But obviously, deep down, cricketers think differently. I was also part of that system. Actually, we couldn’t say what we thought,” Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo.
