Former head coach Ravi Shastri believes that India’s dominance in the ICC men’s team rankings is due to the right mix of youth and experience.
India overtook Australia to take the top spot in the ICC Test Team Rankings earlier this month. The Men in Blue also rank first in the ICC T20I team rankings.

“It’s a tribute to their consistency, their fitness and the way they’ve worked over the last five or six years to be hungry and proud to want to belong there. It is the quality of the players. If you look at these players, a lot of these players are in their prime when you look at the Indian Test side.” Ravi Shastri told host Sanjana Ganesan.

“They have experience, they are at that age where they are battle-hardened, they have traveled all over the world. They know what Test cricket is about, they know what one day cricket is about, they know what T20 cricket is about.” Ravi Shastri added.
While India has been dominant at home in Test cricket, they have also been competitive on the international stage. India won two series in Australia and drew the most recent series in England.

“Your team deserves to be in the top two or three” – Ravi Shastri
Ravi Shastri replied that every team plays to be on top of the rankings when asked whether or not rankings mattered to him as India manager.
“I cared a lot. Being in the top two or three was extremely important and you looked at the rankings and if you knew you were four or five, then that bothers you because your team deserves to be in the top two or three, or that’s what you strive or play for. Every coach, no matter who they are, wants their team to be in the top two or three… it was my effort when I took over as India’s manager… to get them to those top two or three.” Ravi Shastri said.
Shastri spoke about the Indian team players and how they had gained combat experience over years of Test cricket play in recent years.
“It is the quality of the players. If you look at these players, a lot of these players are in their prime when you look at the Indian Test side. They’re experienced, they’re at that battle-hardened age, they’ve traveled the world. They know what Test cricket is about, they know what one day cricket is about, they know what T20 cricket is about,” Shastri said of it,” Ravi Shastri added.
