Yuvraj Singh hints at becoming India’s mentor at ICC events; He reveals being rejected by Ashish Nehra

Former Indian batsman Yuvraj Singh expressed his desire to take up the role of a coach or mentor. He said that he wants to give it back to cricket and help young players cope with both technical and mental challenges.

Whenever Indian cricket is discussed, it is difficult to leave out Yuvraj Singh. The all-rounder has been an incredible servant to the nation in cricket and has played a very important role in making the team a big force in the world of cricket.

In the current era where Indian batsmen are failing to handle pressure, one name that comes to mind for many is Yuvraj Singh. The all-rounder has played great innings for the team in high-pressure matches and has guided them to many famous victories in some of the big tournaments.

Yuvraj Singh was the main architect behind India’s two World Cups in 2007 and 2011. In the ODI World Cup, he won the Player of the Tournament award as he contributed equally well with both bat and ball. His presence in Indian cricket was a huge factor for the team and it is fair to say that there is still no one like him.

Yuvraj Singh, however, may return to the Indian set-up or cricket as he hinted that he would take up the role of a mentor. He said that when his children have settled down, he will try to help the young players improve.

Yuvraj Singh believes that Indian players feel a lot of mental pressure in big arrivals and hopes to work on this with the young players. Speaking during the inauguration of ‘Yuvraj Centers of Excellence’ at Merlin Rise, he explained (quoted by PTI):

“Mentoring is something I love to do. In the next few years, when my children are settled, I want to contribute to cricket and help the youngsters improve. I think we face a lot of mental challenges in big tournaments. I believe in the mental aspect, I can come and work with these guys in the future.

“I feel like I can contribute a lot, especially in the middle order. “I have the confidence to work with youngsters, addressing not only their technique but also the mental challenges that come with cricket.”

Yuvraj Singh further added that he will take over as a coach once his children start going to school. He expressed his excitement to coach any of the IPL teams. Before revealing, he approached Ashish Nehra for a role in Gujarat Titans, but the team’s head coach declined.

Yuvraj Singh admitted that he is looking for the position and is hopeful of serving cricket again. He elaborated:

“Let’s see what opportunities I have, but my priority is my children right now. Once they start school, I’ll have more time. so you can resume (training). I love working with youngsters, especially the boys from my state, and I feel that mentoring is something I would love to do and, I am considering being part of one of the IPL teams.

“I asked Ashish Nehra (Gujarat Titans) sir for a job, but he rejected it. So let’s see where else I can get a position, but for now I have to strike a balance. So definitely in the next few years I want to contribute to cricket and help youngsters improve. “I can contribute a lot.”

Yuvraj Singh has groomed many youngsters. He has trained the likes of Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and others.

Overall throughout his career, Yuvraj Singh scored 11,778 runs and 17 centuries. He was no idiot with the ball as he took a total of 148 wickets across the three formats.
