He now replaces former India batsman Manoj Tiwary, who retired at the end of the last domestic season.

Ahead of the upcoming Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season, the Bengal team has named a 40-year-old veteran to lead the team. The development was announced late by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) on Friday (October 4).

Anustup Majumdar has been given the reins of captaincy to lead the team. He now replaces former India batsman Manoj Tiwary, who retired at the end of the last domestic season.

Majumdar has become known as the ‘crisis man’ of Bengal cricket, and has repeatedly stepped in to help the team during critical moments in recent years.

“We were looking for a responsible and experienced player and he will be available throughout the season,” said a CAB official.

Talking about Anustup’s achievements, the middle-order batsman played for India ‘A’ in 2012 and was in the Kolkata Knight Riders team and played four matches for Pune Warriors in the 2012 IPL.

Mohammed Shami’s return is on hold

On the other hand, Indian pacer Mohammad Shami, who was expected to return from injury in the Ranji Trophy, is still waiting.

Mohammad Shami was announced to play a couple of domestic matches ahead of the much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy, scheduled to be held in November-December. But the 34-year-old has not yet recovered from his right heel injury.

An intriguing change is the removal of senior fast bowler Ishan Porel from the main team, placing him on the waiting list.

Seventeen-year-old pacer Yudhajit Guha received his first call-up after showing outstanding performances for the Indian under-19 team against Australia. He opened the bowling in the second and third junior ODIs held in Puducherry last month. Additionally, Rishabh Vivek and Rohit Kumar are also making their debut in the fast bowling line-up.
