Former Pakistan national cricket team spinner Danish Kaneria has said that only a coach like Gautam Gambhir can rescue Pakistan cricket amid the disastrous run the team is going through.
Pakistan cricket is at an all-time low at the moment and has been performing poorly in all three formats. In white-ball cricket, Pakistan has not been able to win matches against top teams and recently started losing against weaker teams like USA and Zimbabwe.
Things are not looking good in Test cricket either, with red-ball captain Shan Masood on a five-match losing streak since he was appointed as the new captain. Under his leadership, Pakistan suffered a shock 0-2 defeat in the Test series against Bangladesh at home.
Things are also miserable on a physical level in the country as players like Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Ihsanullah, Khurram Shahzad and Aamer Jamal have faced serious injuries and have been out of action for long periods.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi, as well as head coaches Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie, have tried their best to put the team out of its misery but have been unsuccessful.
A huge drama will also soon unfold in Pakistan cricket as both Babar Azam and Shan Masood will reportedly be sacked and Mohammad Rizwan will become the captain of the team across all formats.
Amid the chaos, Denmark’s Kaneria suggested that the Pakistan Cricket Board stick with one captain and back him to the fullest without putting any additional pressure on him.
“Everything is taken for granted; that is why Pakistan cricket’s downfall has come about through the election and change of captains. That will not work. Keep your captain, keep him,” Danish Kaneria told Republic TV.
“Okay, I’ve named him captain for a year. I’ll ask him. I’ll ask him to give me an answer after a year. Nobody will touch him, he has my full support, but he needs to perform at his best. If he doesn’t perform, he’s gone, so that’s what you have to do. If you don’t make difficult decisions, things won’t work out,” added Denmark’s Kaneria.

Denmark’s Kaneria also praised Rahul Dravid for the success of the Indian national cricket team at the international level. He then lauded the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach and said that he does not speak ill of anyone and has a strong personality.
According to Danish Kaneria, Pakistan needs a strong coach like Gautam Gambhir to help them make a strong comeback to international cricket.
“Why are other teams doing so well today? Why is the Indian team doing so well? They had a Rahul Dravid who worked very well with the team, now they have Gautam Gambhir, a fantastic cricketer and a fantastic guy. The way he reacts, you can see it on his face. He doesn’t go around slandering others, he attacks straight away. That’s how you have to be. You have to be strong and like a strong person, you have to take decisions in the face, not from behind,” Kaneria said.
