England red-ball captain and all-rounder Ben Stokes revealed that he had amazing chemistry with Brendon McCullum and they would be on the same page on multiple occasions. However, he revealed that they find it difficult to always be on the same page.

England had appointed Brendon McCullum as their red-ball coach after they wanted a massive turnaround. However, having lost many matches, they bounced back with the duo of McCullum and Stokes doing wonders for the three lions.

After a terrible season in 2025-26, which saw England face consecutive defeats in the longest format of the game, including the humiliating loss to the Australians in the Ashes, the ECB threatened to break up the dynamic coach-captain duo.

Ben Stokes has shared an incredible bond with the former New Zealand batsman, whose Bazball strategies seemed ideal for someone like Stokes, who has always supported a more modernized approach to one of the game’s oldest formats.

However, due to recent disagreements, the two have not always found themselves on the same page. The English captain has revealed that he has never had a bad relationship with McCullum, but it is impossible to always agree on all aspects.

“I think saying we weren’t aligned is a huge overstatement. When you’re in a leadership position with someone else, if someone thinks you’re always going to agree on everything, then it’s just impossible. And to me, that’s not a healthy relationship,” Ben Stokes said.

The English captain further highlighted the fact that cricketers must oppose the things they do not do and agree with the things they do; This is how an ideal environment for sports is built.

“It’s a healthy environment for sport in particular, where everyone just agrees with everyone, or everyone just says yes, you know, the person up there. You need to debate; you don’t need arguments, but you do need discussions, and then you end up getting to a place where you both want to end up.

“Like Brendon and I, we are different in other areas as well, but what we both want is to be successful, and we will possibly decide how to achieve that. It may be the same here, but then it differs slightly here, but we can always end up on the same page by having these discussions,” Stokes continued.

Ben Stokes revealed how he fixed things with McCullum

Stokes revealed that he and McCullum were on the same page during most of their team meetings or strategy calls, but sometimes when they weren’t, they would talk about it in discussions and come to a common point of view.

“We agree 95% of the time on things, but that 5% of the time, we may not agree, because we can have different points of view on some things, and then after discussions, we end up in a place where my character and Brendon’s character put them together, and then we get to where we want to go,” said Ben Stokes.

“But you know, accepting everything was just impossible. So you know, to say that we were not aligned, I think, is a huge exaggeration,” he added.
