Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar blasted Australia on England’s umbrella ground in the first Ashes Test 2023 at Edgbaston. He said the fielding position is for television and won’t give them much of an advance.
England’s Bazball approach was something that has been in the talks for a while now. They played a brand of attacking cricket in the first Test against Australia, but still lost the game to go 1-0 down in the series. The Ben Stokes-led side dominated the game for the majority, but ultimately failed to take wickets.

One of the highlights of their approach to Bazball was the umbrella pitch they set up in game against some Australian batsmen. It was an attacking field that saw four fielders in a quarter circle arc on the side, starting from half fool to square leg.

According to Sunil Gavaskar, England are not doing anything different from a bowling perspective. He also shed light on the Umbrella field and explained:

“While bowling, England are not doing anything different to previous times. Yes, the field placements have been novel, with 0 three men in catching positions either side of the wicket. Two fielders on each side of the field have been seen before and in the air. I have called it a pitch for television rather than one for getting any wicket,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column for midday.
Sunil Gavaskar feels that England have caught the public’s imagination that they are playing orthodox and unorthodox shots. But this used to be before too. Sunil Gavaskar explained:

“The Ashes series in England seems to have captured the imagination of the cricketing public there. England are batting with a freedom that hasn’t been seen before and more shots, both unorthodox and unorthodox, are being taken under the regime of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum than before the duo took over. That’s where Bazball stops.”
Ashes 2023: ‘England could have been easily bagged if these same fielders had been five to 10 steps behind’, Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar further highlighted that England missed few chances and if they had kept the fielders in the normal positions they would have won. Sunil Gavaskar explained:
“If anything, the few missed chances England had could easily have been taken advantage of if these same fielders had been five to 10 paces back in normal field positions. Up front and so close, the fielders had very little time to react to those hard but upward pulls, so they could barely get their hands on the catches.”
England suffered a disappointing 2 wicket loss. For the 4 1/2 days they were on top and looked set to win as they needed to take the last 2 wickets and had over 70 runs to save. Pat Cummins played an outstanding 44-run unbeaten stroke and won the game for his side. England would be hoping for a better result in the second game. The second Test of Ashes 2023 is scheduled to take place at Lord’s in London. The game is scheduled to take place. June 28.
