Former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell criticized England for relying on senior professionals in the ongoing 2023 Ashes. He lashed out at the Ben Stokes-led team for offering a red-carpet treatment to Moeen Ali, who he says didn’t even bother Australia in her prime.
The ongoing Ashes 2023 has lived up to all expectations as both England and Australia have showcased a high-profile brand of cricket. The series currently sits at 2-1 with the visitors leading and all three games have gone by the wire.

On-field banter along with outside chatter have kept things interesting in the series and with two games left, it’s fair to say that two more blockbusters will be on the line. England with their bazball approach has been impressive, but they somehow lost two games because they failed to counter critical positions.

England have, according to Ian Chappell, been reliant on their senior players and he noted how the inclusion of Mark Wood has added pace to the bowling attack. Writing in his column for ESPNCricinfo, he said:

“England are heavily reliant on the ability of Stuart Broad and his choke on David Warner to spearhead their attack. They introduced big heart Mark Wood late into the series and he proved his worth with a high speed attack on Headingley. Wood’s inclusion highlighted a perennially failed England team.

Ashes 2023: They chose to give Moeen Ali red carpet treatment – Ian Chappell criticizes England
Moeen Ali made a surprise return to Test Cricket when he regained his retirement and joined the England squad for the ongoing 2023 Ashes. He was approached by team management after Jack Leach was written out of the series.
Ian Chappell pointed to Moeen Ali’s red carpet treatment and also highlighted areas where England have struggled. He explained:
“Not only did they fail to introduce their threatening pace until the third Test, but they chose a wicketkeeper who is a batsman first, in Jonny Bairstow, whose glove mistakes have cost his side dear. They also chose to offer a red carpet treatment to Moeen Ali, who in his prime was never much of a bowling or batting threat for Australia.”
The next game of the Ashes 2023 will be played at Old Trafford from July 19.
