37-year-old pacer Stuart Broad has predicted that goalie-batsman Jonny Bairstow will deliver a big performance for the England cricket team in the fourth Test of Ashes 2023.

Yorkshire’s 33-year-old goalkeeper and batsman, Bairstow, has faced heavy criticism following his poor glove work in the ongoing series. Also, with the bat, Jonny Bairstow hasn’t been very good either as he has posted scores of 78, 20, 16, 10, 12 and 5.

In his column for The Daily Mail, Broad stated that Bairstow shines under pressure and will look to bounce back strongly in the fourth Test.

“We all know Jonny Bairstow well enough to be able to say with confidence that he reacts best under pressure. In that sense, he and I are quite similar. That’s why I have a feeling he’s going to deliver this week. He will feel that he has something to prove, not to any of us in the locker room, but to the outside world,” Broad wrote.

After Bairstow’s poor batting and wicket-keeping form, many have called for the inclusion of Ben Foakes in the playing XI. In particular, Foakes is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world at the moment. However, England have given Bairstow the nod ahead of Foakes due to the former’s batting skills.

Jimmy Anderson, by his own admission, did not have the best games at Edgbaston and Lord’s – Stuart Broad

James Anderson has failed to impress so far in Ashes. At Lord’s he posted figures of 1/53 and 1/64 and at Edgbaston he had figures of 1/53 and 0/56. After performances by him, he was rested for the third test at Headingley.

Stuart Broad admitted that James Anderson hasn’t been at his best in the series, but blamed his groin injury and ineffective shooting.

“I know Jimmy Anderson didn’t have the best games at Edgbaston and Lord’s either, by his own admission, but I honestly think he was unlucky, both due to the timing of his groin injury with Lancashire, which interrupted his preparation for the Ashes and with the releases. He has bowled God knows how many overs at Old Trafford and I expect a great performance from him in a high-pressure match,” he added.

Meanwhile, Australia hold a 2-1 series lead. The fourth test between England and Australia will be played from July 19 to 23. The match will take place at Old Trafford, Manchester.
