Australia opener Marcus Harris draws inspiration from Usman Khawaja as he contemplates a possible return to Test cricket. Marcus Harris expressed his hope that his consistent and strong performance over time will be duly recognized in the selection process.

David Warner, who announced his retirement from Test cricket earlier this year, will play his final match against Pakistan in Sydney. The 37-year-old backed Marcus Harris as his potential successor ahead of the boxing test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Head coach Andrew McDonald stressed keeping options open, with selectors likely to consider candidates such as Harris, Cameron Bancroft, Matt Renshaw and Cameron Green. Harris, as a centrally contracted player, is considered the favorite for the job.

“I’d like to think I haven’t done much wrong for that to change. I feel that my performances over a long period of time have consistently remained at a good level. “I feel like I’ve done what I had to do.” he further added.

When Marcus Harris was dropped from the Australian team, captain Pat Cummins clarified that it was not due to a loss of form. Harris expressed optimism about his return, citing his consistent performances in domestic cricket.

“You don’t lose faith because they didn’t abandon you for reasons of form. That keeps your spirit high.” Harris said.

“The perfect example is probably Uzzie. You hear how in 2019 he thought he was done and would probably never play again. His last two years have been the best cricket he has played.” he further added.

Harris’ last appearance for Australia in Test cricket was in the Ashes series in 2022. He was replaced by Usman Khawaja, who scored two centuries during the Sydney Test match of that series. Khawaja’s exceptional form firmly secured his position in the team.

Marcus Harris emphasized that it is inappropriate to dismiss someone in the current era, taking inspiration from Usman Khawaja. Harris expressed confidence in himself and stated that he is ready to take advantage of any opportunity that comes his way.

“I think that nowadays you can’t rule anyone out. I feel like my mood, if you get down, you can feel that way a little bit. I’d like to back myself and I think I’ve got a lot of good cricket ahead of me. If I get the chance, I can grab it with both hands.” Harris concluded.

Australia is scheduled to take part in a two-Test series against the West Indies, starting on January 17 at the Adelaide Oval. The second and final Test match is scheduled to take place at The Gabba in Brisbane from January 25-29.
