The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed concern over the controversial dismissal of Mohammad Rizwan in the second Test against Australia. The PCB decided to take up issues related to umpiring and technology with the International Cricket Council (ICC).
During Pakistan’s second innings, Australian captain Pat Cummins dismissed Mohammad Rizwan caught behind. The on-field umpire initially refused to dismiss Rizwan. However, the decision was eventually overturned through the Decision Review System (DRS).
The ‘Snickometer’ showed a spike just above Mohammad Rizwan’s wrist, causing discontent within the Pakistan camp. The goalkeeper expressed his displeasure with the decision and reluctantly returned to the dressing room at the Boxing Day trial.
Following Pakistan’s 79-run defeat in the Melbourne Test, PCB director Zaka Ashraf held talks with team manager Mohammad Hafeez. Recent reports suggest that the Pakistani junta is prepared to draw the attention of the global governing body to these issues.
It is worth mentioning that the rules on cricket and the use of technology go through the approval of the ICC Executive Board, a process that includes scrutiny by the MCC Cricket Committee and the ICC Cricket Committee.
We all know the basics of the game – Mohammad Hafeez
In the post-match press conference, Mohammad Hafeez pointed out the inconsistency in the referees’ decisions throughout the match. Hafeez emphasized the importance of prioritizing instincts and basics of cricket over over-reliance on technology.
“If you look at the whole game, there were very inconsistent decisions by the referees. We play this beautiful game of cricket with natural instinct and we all know the basics of the game,” Hafeez said.
“However, at times, it seems that the focus is more on the technology than the cricket being played itself. I think this is an area that needs to be addressed,” she added.
Brings doubt and confusion – Mohammad Hafeez
Mohammad Hafeez clarified that he is not opposed to its use, but considers it unacceptable when it generates doubts and confusion. Specifically, Hafeez mentioned his lack of understanding regarding decisions labeled “referee decision.”
“I’m not against technology in the game. But if it generates doubt and confusion, it is not acceptable. Some decisions were not understandable. The ball that hits the stumps is always out. I will never understand why there is a referee’s decision,” Hafeez said.
Mohammad Rizwan’s dismissal in the final session of Day 4 of the Boxing Day Test left Pakistan on the brink of defeat, disrupting a crucial partnership with Salman Ali Agha. The batting pair added a crucial 57-run stand for the sixth wicket in the 317-run chase.
Australia capitalized on the momentum gained from Rizwan’s dismissal, securing the remaining four wickets in less than seven overs to conclude the game. Pakistan were bowled out for 237 in the last innings. They suffered their 16th consecutive Test defeat in Australia.
