AUSTRALIA
As expected, Australia made light work of West Indies in Adelaide to hit the front in this Test series. The hosts scored 283 either side of bowling West Indies out for 188 and 120 respectively, with Josh Hazlewood taking nine-wickets across the match. This led to a leisurely 23-run chase for victory, which Australia completed without losing a wicket. Opener Usman Khawaja had to retire hurt after being hit in the helmet, but has since passed a concussion Test and is available for this second Test.
WEST INDIES
We mentioned the worry about where West Indies’ runs were going to come from across the first Test and those fears were realised as the tourists could only accumulate 308 runs over the course of their two innings. From their perspective, the game will be remembered for Shamar Joseph’s first wicket in Test match cricket being that of superstar Steve Smith.
THE PREDICTION
Australia were totally dominant during the last Test and moving onto the Gabba in Brisbane, little is expected to change. The hosts’ plethora of quality seam bowlers should enjoy themselves on what is usually a fast and bouncy surface and it would be no surprise if West Indies were to find themselves struggling with the bat once again.
