Babar Azam thinks of protection, Shan Masood is aggressive: Aamer Jamal’s blunt verdict on Pakistan captains

Pakistani all-rounder Aamer Jamal has highlighted the key difference between the captaincy style of Babar Azam and that of Shan Masood. The 28-year-old has played under the captaincy of both players.

He made his international cricket debut in 2022 during the home T20I series against England under the captaincy of Babar Azam. Later in 2023, he made his Test debut under the captaincy of Shan Masood during the tour of Australia. While Aamer Jamal has not really managed to make a big impact in T20Is so far, he enjoyed a brilliant debut Test series in Australia.

Although Pakistan suffered defeats in all three Test matches, Aamer Jamal managed to put in a good performance as he impressed with both bat and ball. In three matches, he scored 143 runs at a top score of 82 and took 18 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls, all while playing under the captaincy of Shan Masood.

Both have different mindsets: Aamer Jamal

In a recent interview with Cricwick, Aamer Jamal was asked about the captaincy methods of Babar Azam and Shan Masood. Having played under the captaincy of both players, the Pakistani all-rounder made an interesting observation. He began by saying that both Babar and Masood have different mindsets and he gets along well with both of them.

He further said that Babar is a bit defensive in his captaincy while Masood likes to be aggressive. Jamal concluded by saying that though both Babar and Masood have different methods, he understands both of them well.

“When it comes to captaincy, both have different mindsets. Shan Bhai’s approach is different and Bobby Bhai’s approach is different. I have a very good relationship with both of them,” Aamer Jamal said.

“I have had good relations with Shan Bhai since I was playing first-class cricket. When I joined the Pakistan team to practice bowling, he treated me very well.

“Both have different mindsets. I think Bobby Bhai is a bit defensive. He thinks about his safety first. Shan Bhai is a bit aggressive. As captains, both of them understand you and ask you what your needs are and what you need,” he added.

Meanwhile, Jamal is likely to be in action next month when Pakistan hosts Bangladesh for a Test series. He has not played for Pakistan since the T20I series against New Zealand in January this year.
