Former Pakistan cricketer Tanvir Ahmed has supported captain Babar Azam amid all the criticism during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. He said that the right-hander should resign as captain of the T20I team once the tournament ends.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam is the biggest talking point in Pakistan Cricket. The opening batsman received a lot of criticism for his poor leadership in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, due to which the team suffered an early exit from the tournament.
Babar Azam also failed to lead from the front as he failed to score much for the team, scoring 91 runs with the bat in 3 games. Under his leadership, the team suffered defeats against the United States of America and India, which nearly eliminated them before the failure in the game between the United States and IRE confirmed their elimination.
Following Pakistan’s exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup, Babar Azam’s position as team captain has come under serious scrutiny. There have been calls to remove him as team leader as his performances were not up to par in the tournament.
Tanvir Ahmed admitted that Babar Azam is not a good captain, but it was the PCB selectors who approached him and re-appointed him as captain. He also revealed that he had earlier told Babar not to take over the leadership again because if he failed, people would question him. Speaking on a TV show whose video he shared on his X account, he explained:
“I agree with you. I say Babar is not a good captain. So don’t make him captain. Babar will not become captain of his own free will. He gave up the captaincy. This cricket board came to him and offered him the captaincy .Wahab Riaz and Razaq said that Babar Azam should be the captain. So Babar Azam is not the captain. So don’t make him captain.
“He doesn’t bat well. He should go down. So what will happen? Will he leave the team and run away? No, he won’t. I had told Babar before sitting in front of the TV channel, that They are giving you the captaincy. No accept it. They will tell you again that you don’t know how to be captain. I suggest Babar Azam quits T20Is. He wants to keep Tests or ODIs, it is his wish.

Tanvir Ahmed further stated that there are people behind Babar Azam’s batting in T20Is but stated that the team will be in the same situation even if Mohammad Rizwan becomes the captain. He added:
“Because people are behind his batting. He plays very slowly. After that, if you want to take a break from T20, you can do that. It’s up to you. Then I will see how many people are behind him.
“Then I will ask everyone, who is the best captain in domestic cricket in Pakistan? Everyone says Rizwan should be the captain. Write this down, the team in this condition under him also because he has no players.” He concluded.
