Australia once again broke the hearts of Indian fans by defeating India in the final of the U19 World Cup 2024 by 79 runs. The Indian team, which was playing in its fifth consecutive final of the tournament, once again failed to cross the finish line and also failed to win its sixth U-19 World Cup trophy.
The Uday Saharan-led Indian team could not chase 254 runs and were restricted to 174 runs. Murugan Abhishek showed some fighting spirit from the bottom end of the batting line-up but it was a failure for India in the U19 World Cup final played in Benoni.
Australia won its fourth U-19 World Cup, and this was also its first after 2010. India has already played Australia twice in the U-19 World Cup final and won both times. Australia also achieved its first victory against India in the U19 World Cup final.
Australia, who batted first, were able to post a score of 253/7, in which Harjas Singh top-scored with 55 runs off 64 balls. Indian pacer Raj Limbani was India’s star player with the ball and took three wickets. Apart from Harjas, captain Hugh Weibgen and Oliver Peake have important contributions and played innings of 48 and 46* runs respectively.
Chasing the target, India lost a first ground in the form of Kulkarni’s Throne for 3 races. Musheer Khan and Adarsh Singh tried to add some runs to the team’s total and helped them get back into the match early. Musheer also scored 22 runs. No other batsman could stay in the crease for long and was dismissed cheaply. Adarsh Singh and Murugan Abhishek showed some grace and played innings of 47 and 42 runs respectively. Raf MacMillan and Mahli Beardman were the stars of the show for Australia with the ball and picked up 3 wickets each.
