Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) traveled to the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi for match 56 of the Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) against Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) on Tuesday, May 7.

Rajasthan Royals won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match. The RR bowling was not up to the mark in the match and ended up conceding 221 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin was the team’s best wicket-taker as he took a 3-wicket haul. Apart from him, Sandeep Sharma, Trent Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal got one wicket each.

For Delhi Capitals, Abishek Porel (65) and Jake Fraser-McGurk (50) did a fantastic job early on and then Tristan Stubbs (41) finished the innings with his power.

Chasing the target, Sanju Samson led from the front and played an excellent knock of 86 runs. Riyan Parag and Shubham Dubey supported him well but after their dismissals, Rajasthan Royals were restricted to 201/8 and lost the match by 20 runs.

Speaking after the match, Samson said they thought the match was in their hands and the goal could have been chased. Sanju Samson also opined that they gave away 10 extra runs in the match. Sanju Samson stated:

“I think we had it in our hands, it was like 11 or 12 runs per over, it was possible, these things happen in the IPL.

“Yes, we are doing both things well, we would like to maintain what the conditions demand, 220 was 10 extra runs to chase, the DC opener came out and did what he does, we still came back well.”

Sanju Samson, while mentioning that Rajasthan Royals have lost some close games, credited DC batsman Tristan Stubbs for doing a great job against their best players. Sanju Samson explained:

“We’ve lost three games, but all of those games have been very close, we’ve been playing remarkably well, we have to make some adjustments and we need to keep the momentum going. Yes and no, actually, you have to give credit to someone like Stubbs, who hit well against Sandeep, he scored 2-3 extra sixes against my best players who are Yuzi Chahal and Sandeep Sharma. We have lost the game, we have to find out where we lost the game, we have to keep moving.”
