Delhi Capitals co-owner reacts after Sourav Ganguly announced Ricky Ponting’s exit ahead of the franchise

Sourav Ganguly, on Saturday (July 13), sensationally revealed that Delhi Capitals have parted ways with Ricky Ponting as the head coach of the team.

The former Australia captain was the coach of the Delhi-based franchise for 7 years. After guiding the Mumbai Indians to their second IPL title in 2015, Ricky Ponting joined Delhi Capitals in 2018. While expectations were sky-high for the legendary cricketer, he failed to end Delhi’s long wait for their first IPL title.

In his first season as head coach, Ricky Ponting failed to guide Delhi Capitals ahead in the league stage. However, the national capital-based side qualified for the playoffs in the next three seasons. In 2020, they also reached the IPL final for the first time in their history.

However, Delhi Capitals’ performance in the last three seasons has been very disappointing. They have not advanced above the league stage since they qualified for the playoffs in 2021. In 2022, DC finished in the fifth place, while in 2023, they finished in a disappointing ninth place. In this year’s IPL, they failed to make it to the playoffs again as they finished in the sixth place with 7 wins and the same number of losses.

Parth Jindal reacts to Ricky Ponting’s exit:

Sourav Ganguly dropped a big bombshell by revealing that the franchise has parted ways with Ricky Ponting. The former India captain, who is currently the director of cricket for the franchise, revealed the news during an interview with a Bengali media outlet.

Shortly after Ganguly’s revelation, Delhi Capitals confirmed the news and thanked Ricky Ponting for his services. Later, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal also took to X to thank the former Australian batsman for his services and wished him all the best, writing:

“Thank you @RickyPonting. Thank you for 7 amazing seasons. Wishing you and your family all the best! @DelhiCapitals is grateful for all you have done.”

Meanwhile, Ganguly has also stated that he will be the head coach of Delhi Capitals next season. The former cricketer claimed that he has already started planning for the next mega auction and is eyeing to win the IPL title in 2025.

“Let me give you a piece of news. Head coach Ricky Ponting will not be the coach of Delhi Capitals. Geoffrey Boycott was right as Ponting has not been able to take the franchise forward for the last 7 years. I have to talk to the franchise and ask them to consider Indian coaches. I will be the head coach. Let’s see how I perform,” Ganguly told Aajkal.
