Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has named two players who can become India’s captain in the future. Karthik has picked Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as his options for India’s future captain across formats.

Both Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are already being seen as future options for the leadership role. Both of them have already led India in a few international matches so far. In fact, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are also the captains of their respective IPL franchises, Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals.

Dinesh Karthik picks Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as future Indian captains

While speaking on Cricbuzz’s Ask CB segment, Dinesh Karthik was asked about India’s future captain across formats. Karthik picked Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant as possible options for India’s future captain.

The former wicketkeeper-batsman added that both players are leading their teams in the IPL, so both have a chance to become captains of India in the future.

“Two young players come to mind who have potential and can definitely lead India across all formats in the near future. One is Rishabh Pant and two are Shubman Gill. Both are captains of IPL teams and have captained India. I think with time, they will get a chance to become India’s captain across all formats as well,” Karthik said.

Shubman Gill’s debut as captain

Recently, Shubman Gill led India to a 4-1 win in the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. It was the first time he led India in international cricket. Gill is also the current vice-captain of India in white-ball formats and is a possible option for the role in Test cricket as well.

Shubman Gill made his international debut in 2019 in an ODI against New Zealand. Since then, he has earned a place in the Indian team. While the youngster is still looking to cement his place in Tests and T20Is, Gill is already a permanent member of India’s ODI squad. The 24-year-old has scored 2328 runs in 47 ODIs so far at an average of 58.20 and a strike rate of 101.74 with 6 hundreds and 13 fifties.

On the other hand, Rishabh Pant was always on the radar of the selectors for the role of a pacer in Indian cricket. But the life-threatening accident hampered his development for some time. However, he has returned to the Indian team with a bang and could be an option for the future captain of India.

Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are likely to be in action in India’s upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh at home. While Gill will look to consolidate his No. 3 spot, Pant will be aiming for a comeback in Test cricket. If he gets a chance, it will be his first Test after his return from the accident. Currently, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are playing in the Duleep Trophy for India A and India B respectively.
