Glenn Maxwell confirms return to 50-over cricket despite ODI retirement

Australian legend Glenn Maxwell has retired from ODI cricket but remains available for his state team, Victoria, for the 50-over championship. He also does not have a contract with Cricket Australia.

Glenn Maxwell, who has played for years in the Australian 50-over team, recently announced his retirement from international cricket at the end of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. Maxwell’s retirement brought an end to a 149-match career.

Having amassed 3,990 runs in his career, primarily as a lower-order batsman, Maxwell batted at a strike rate of 126.70, along with his four centuries, most of which came during the ICC tournaments for Australia. His legendary double century at CWC 2023 would be considered one of the most iconic innings ever played in the history of the 50-over World Cups.

Glenn Maxwell to star in Victoria despite ODI withdrawal

Despite having retired from international 50-over cricket, Glenn Maxwell has stated that he will be available to star for Victoria whenever the team needs him. However, he does not have a contract with the state team.

Despite his retirement announcement in June 2025, he played in the one-day championship for Victoria last season and also scored his first List A century against Queensland. He therefore denied a state contract with Victoria while living full-time in Queensland.

Glenn Maxwell, who will turn 38 in October 2026, has no reason to accept a state contract given he is now just a one-format player for Australia. Regardless, Maxwell has expressed his desire to continue playing for Australia, although he will be 39 by the time of the Los Angeles Olympics and 40 by the next T20 World Cup in 2028.

Matthew Short denies state contract, all set to appear at national level for Victoria

Along with Glenn Maxwell, another Victorian cricketer, Matt Short, also lost his contract with CA last month. He lost his place in the contracts after being dropped from Australia’s T20 World Cup squad and was also nearly rejected from Australia’s first-choice ODI team.

In recent times, there has been a trend for international players not to commit to state contracts as they generally want to keep their schedules available for franchise cricket.

Short, now 30, played four Sheffield Shield matches and also five one-day matches for Victoria last summer, but missed the Shield final due to commitments to the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Short will continue to be available for Victoria in all formats.

Victoria added under-19 players to its squad

Victoria has decided to make some massive call-ups to her Victorian team for the upcoming one-day championship. They have hired young people again like Fergus O’Neill and Campbell Kellaway during the season.

Australia Under-19 representatives such as Tom Paddington and Aryan Sharma have also been added to the rookie list and will be part of the Victorian state team for the upcoming 2026-27 domestic season.
