“He is suffering from…” – BCB provides update on Shakib Al Hasan

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was diagnosed with a retinal condition in his left eye and his eye problem began during the ODI World Cup 2023. Shakib consulted several ophthalmologists in Bangladesh and around the world, and after multiple rounds of examinations , It was revealed that Shakib had an infection in the retina of his left eye.

While speaking to Cricbuzz, Shakib Al Hasan revealed the problems he had with his eyes and was playing with blurred vision during the ODI World Cup 2023.

This hampered Shakib’s performance during the tournament. Shakib Al Hasan had said: “It’s not in one or two matches at the World Cup, but I had it (the eye problem) throughout the World Cup. “It could have happened, he had enormous discomfort facing the ball.”

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has provided a medical update on Shakib Al Hasan. According to the update, Shakib has been confirmed to be suffering from extrafoveal central serous chorioretinopathy or CSR. The update further added that a conservative approach will be taken to address the issue.

BCB chief doctor Dr Debashis Chowdhary said: “Shakib has been complaining of subtle problems in his left eye. After consulting ophthalmologists in Bangladesh and abroad and after multiple eye evaluations, it was confirmed that she suffers from extrafoveal central serous chorioretinopathy (CSR) of the left eye.

“It has been decided that a conservative approach will be taken to manage the problem for now. Extrafoveal central serous chorioretinopathy is a condition that affects the retina and causes visual disturbances. “The medical team overseeing Shakib’s case is optimistic about effectively managing the disease with a conservative approach.”

Shakib Al Hasan could only score 186 runs in seven matches of the ODI World Cup 2023 at an average of 26.57. Bangladesh showed an unforgettable performance in the tournament as they finished in the 8th position with only 2 wins in nine matches.

Shakib Al Hasan was also in a lot of headlines before the tournament due to his conflict with former captain Tamim Iqbal. Tamim withdrew his name from the ODI World Cup because he did not want to play in the middle order. Iqbal also made a 180-degree turn from his international retirement in mid-2023 and also resigned from the ODI captaincy.

Shakib Al Hasan before the ODI World Cup stated that Tamim Iqbal’s behavior was childish and that he would learn to play for the team. Shakib also stated that Tamim will learn from Rohit Sharma and believes that he is a selfless player.

Shakib Al Hasan is currently part of the Bangladesh Premier League and plays for Rangpur Riders for an amount of 40 million Bangladesh rupees. The runners are currently at 3rd place in the BPL 2024 points table with one win in 2 games.
