Dilshan Madushanka

Sri Lanka left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka will miss several matches for Mumbai Indians in the upcoming 2024 Indian Premier League season from March 22 onwards. Madushanka was bought by the management led by Mark Boucher for a price much higher than his base price. His name created a bidding war during the auction that took place at Dubai’s Coca-Cola Stadium last December before Mumbai acquired him for Rs 4.6 crore.

Dilshan Madushanka recently participated in the white-ball phase of Sri Lanka’s all-format tour of Bangladesh, which is at its halfway point. The Lankans won the T20I series 2-1, winning the first and third T20Is, while the ODI series is currently tied 1-1 with Bangladesh winning the first and the visitors winning the second at the Zarur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Sri Lanka Cricket Board confirms Dilshan Madushanka’s injury

While bowling in the first innings of Sri Lanka’s 3-wicket win 2 days ago, Dilshan Madushanka had injured his left hamstring, the severity of which reached such an extent that he had to leave the field mid-game. . He could not even complete his seventh over of the match as the Lanka medical team took him off the field immediately after reporting pain.

Madushanka had bowled 6.4 overs in the match, picking up the wickets of opening batsman Litton Das and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto for 0 and 40 respectively. Bangla Tigers finally put 286 on the board thanks to the efforts of Soumya Sarkar who got out for 68 and Towhid Hridoy remained out for 96 runs off 102 balls with 3 fours and 5 sixes.

After coming off the field, Madushanka was sent for a round of MRIs which ultimately ruled him out of the entire series in which the third ODI and two Test matches are yet to be played.

“Dilshan Madushanka will not participate further in the ongoing tour as the bowler will return to begin rehabilitation work after suffering an injury during the second ODI. “Madushanka, who left the field during the second ODI while bowling, suffered an injury to his left hamstring, as confirmed by an MRI performed on the player,” the Sri Lanka cricket board said.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka assistant coach Naveed Nawaz, while talking to reporters, confirmed that pacer Dilshan Madushanka will be out of action for 4-6 weeks.

Dilshan Madushanka boasts of a decent international record since he debuted not long ago in 2022.

The 23-year-old has scalped 41 ODI wickets in 23 matches and has 14 T20I wickets in 14 outings. He previously represented franchises such as Sharjah Warriors in ILT20 and Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20 league. His absence may not hurt Mumbai that much as he has a decent back-up in the bowling attack.
