‘I decided to take a break because…’ – Ishan Kishan hits out at BCCI, breaks silence on ‘depressing’ contract snub

Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan has opened up on why he opted for a break despite being a regular member of the Indian team in all three formats of the game. He claimed that he was not feeling well and no one understood what he was going through.

A few months ago, Ishan Kishan was one of the key members of the Indian team in all three formats of the game. The wicketkeeper-batsman put in an incredible performance for the team and it is fair to say that he sealed his place in the team, but things have changed drastically for him.

Ishan Kishan, after the white-ball series against South Africa, opted for a break from the Test series and has not played a single match for the Indian team in any of the three formats since then. The wicketkeeper-batsman, who played the ICC World Cup 2023, opted out citing fatigue.

But after that, he was reportedly seen partying and attending TV shows without BCCI permission. Head coach Rahul Dravid told the wicketkeeper-batsman to play domestic cricket to make a comeback in the Indian team, but he did not agree and continued to spend time off the field.

This did not go down well with the BCCI as they removed the wicketkeeper-batsman from central contracts. Ishan Kishan then made a comeback in the IPL but did not make the kind of impact he would have wished for. Even his comeback in the Indian team seems too far away now.

Speaking about why he decided to take a break, Ishan Kishan highlighted that being left on the bench after playing regularly made him experience travel fatigue. He said that this forced him to take a break but only those close to him understood. Speaking to Indian Express, he said:

“I was scoring runs and suddenly I found myself on the bench. These things happen in a team sport. But I suffered from travel fatigue. It meant that something was wrong, that I wasn’t feeling well or well, so I decided to take a break. Unfortunately, though, apart from my family and a few people close to me, no one understood.”

Ishan Kishan was also asked about his dismissal from central contracts and he replied that he did not want to be sad about it and would continue to give his best. He explained:

“I don’t want to be sad about anything. I’ll keep giving my best.”

It was not easy for me – Ishan Kishan

Ishan Kishan also spoke about the challenges he faced in the last 6 months. He said that he was feeling depressed and it was not easy for him to come out. He concluded by saying that a lot of questions also arose in his mind. He said:

“It was depressing. Today I don’t want to say everything was fine. It wasn’t easy for me at all. You go through a lot. Mere dimag mey ye sab chalta raha ki yaar kya hoga gaya, kyu ho gaya, mere saath kyu (You ask questions like what happened, why me). All these things happened while I was acting.”

Now Ishan Kishan is reportedly keen to make an impact in the upcoming domestic season for Jharkhand. It remains to be seen what his future holds in the Indian team.
