Pakistani cricketer Ahmed Shehzad has finally broken his silence on the appeal of the catch ruled out during the ODI against Sri Lanka in 2015. He said he had his eyes closed and did not know if the catch had been made.

Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Thirimanne tried to dispatch the ball to a bound on the leg side. But Ahmed Shehzad, who was fielding deep, appeared as an obstacle. He tried to catch the ball but made a mess. The ball hit the ground, but he claimed the ball missed the ground and got caught between his bicep and forearm.

Ahmed Shehzad spoke about the capture, admitting that it was a mistake in judgment on his part. He said that he was pretty sure the ball got stuck between his elbows when he had his eyes closed.

Speaking to the Nadir Ali podcast, he explained: “It was an error of judgment on my part. I thought the trap was taken. I was pretty sure the ball got stuck here (shows elbow) and it was there the whole time.

“If you watch that video from the beginning, the impact came here (shows elbow again). My eyes were closed, and you really don’t know if the catch has been taken.”

Ahmed Shehzad went on to say that he did not appeal a false capture and would not even think about it because, with cameras everywhere, it was not funny. He elaborated:

“No, no, I promise you I didn’t know. You can’t possibly know it’s not out and still appeal with 180 cameras watching. You can’t sneak like that in front of the camera. Mistakes are another thing, but you can’t get away with a fake catch.”

Ahmed Shehzad has been among the best batsmen in Pakistan. He has scored 2605 runs in ODI along with 982 runs in Tests and 1471 runs in T20I.
