Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has taken a dig at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for its failure to implement a successful system.

Shahid Afridi’s comments came in the wake of PCB’s recent actions in the wake of Pakistan’s poor performance at last month’s T20 World Cup. The Babar Azam-led side did not perform well in the tournament and suffered a humiliating exit in the group stage. They began their campaign with defeats against the United States and India and though they managed to beat Canada and Ireland, their efforts were not enough to earn them a place in the Super 8.

Shortly after the campaign ended, the PCB decided to sack Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from the selection committee and at the same time form a new nine-member selection committee. They had also made a number of changes ahead of the T20 World Cup.

The new PCB management sacked Mohammad Hafeez as the team manager immediately after taking charge. Later in April, the PCB also removed Shaheen Afridi as the T20I captain after just one series and reinstated Babar Azam as the captain. They had also appointed Gary Kirsten as the new white-ball coach. However, the decisions did not pay off as Babar Azam failed to lead Pakistan to a good position in the World Cup.

You have to give the system time: Shahid Afridi

Shahid Afridi has criticised the administration following the introduction of a number of changes by the PCB. The Pakistani legend has said that the administration needs to give adequate time to a system to make it work. He highlighted that the PCB introduces a new system every year when there is a change of chairman.

Shahid Afridi said that PCB officials and key Pakistani stakeholders need to come up with a concrete plan and work on it for a minimum of three years to get any results.

“When you change or introduce a new structure, you have to give the system time. Every year, new presidents come in and a new system is introduced. Things don’t work like that,” Shahid Afridi told Sports24.

“All the board members, the senior players, should sit down together at a table and come up with a plan. Then let that plan run for three years. Let the results come in. If you keep changing the system every year, what results can you expect?” he added.
