Indian cricketer Tilak Varma’s childhood coach, Salam Bayash, has said that Bombay Indians (MI) has played a significant role in shaping his career. Salam Bayash’s comments come after Tilak Varma was picked for the upcoming T20I series against West Indies and the 2023 Asian Games.

Tilak Varma is a player without caps. He has been a part of the Mumbai Indians for the past few seasons. He showed incredible form in LPI 2023, hitting 343 runs in 11 games at an average of 42+. The left-handed hitter had a 164+ strike rate while batting in the tournament. After his good show, he earned a national call.

Mumbai Indians have played an important role in Tilak Varma’s career: Child Coach Salam Bayash

During an interview with Times of India, Tilak Varma’s childhood coach Salam Bayash credited Bombay Indians for playing an important role in the young hitter’s career. Bayash also said the franchise has prepared him well over the years.

“Mumbai Indians have played an important role in his career. They have fixed it. Mumbai Indians is a team where a player enters as a lump of clay and then is molded, shaped, strengthened and colored by management for brighter prospects. Tilak is one of those players. The practice system is very good. They prepare a player 90 percent in practice itself,” said Salam Bayash.

Salam Bayash also said that batting legend Sachin Tendulkar also provided immense support for Tilak Varma. Sachin Tendulkar he is the franchise mentor for the Mumbai Indians.

“The God of cricket is there. No one can teach you better than the God of cricket. The tips and advice from him can make a hitter’s career. Tilak is grateful to have had the opportunity to grow in such an environment and reach this level. The support from him and encouragement from him (from Sachin) were immense in Tilak’s career,” the coach further said.

Praising the patron of Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma, Bayash said that the Indian patron gives Tilak Varma a lot of freedom.

“Rohit is a fantastic captain. He gave a lot of freedom and freedom to Tilak. Tilak always says that Rohit tells him ‘tu khul ke khel na, tension nahi lene ka’ (Just play freely, don’t stress). That freedom has given Tilak confidence,” Bayash said.

According to Balam, Suryakumar Yadav should be credited for teaching smart hitting to Tilak Varma. The coach also recalled how Yadav told him that he will take care of Tilak Varma in the Mumbai Indians team.

“Tilak was very good at cross shots and coverage shots, but little by little he started hitting smart. He would credit Suryakumar Yadav for this. When Surya, along with Sachin sir, Rohit, Arjun Tendulkar, Ishan Kishan, Shams Mulani, Dewald Brevis and others visited Tilak’s house for a dinner, he (Suryakumar) came to me and, ‘Sir, don’t worry. Tilak is talented and in good hands. I’ll take care of him),” Bayash recalled.

Tilak Varma has only played two seasons of IPL and managed to get a national call. The left-handed batsman scored 397 runs in IPL 2022 at an average of 36+.

In the 2023 season, he came up with another brilliant show, snapping 343 runs in just 11 games. Overall, Varma has an average of 38.95 and a strike rate of 144+ in 25 IPL games.
