The Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 will begin in June and will be its tenth edition. It will be organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board and will run until July. The tournament will feature 12 teams, with 6 teams divided into two groups. Before the tournament, the Indian women’s national cricket team announced the squad.
Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the team in the upcoming edition of the T20 World Cup. The Women in Blue will be looking for a back-to-back World Cup victory after their recent success in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 at home. Kaur addressed the press conference after the announcement was made, along with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and chief selector Amita Sharma.
Harmanpreet Kaur sets a new record
Harmanpreet Kaur will be heading into her tenth ICC Women’s T20 World Cup tournament, appearing in every edition since the tournament’s inception in 2009. This will be a historic milestone for the team captain. She led the team to the final in the 2020 edition, but finished as runner-up in the tournament.
Smriti Mandhana will be the vice-captain of the team. The left-hander will be heading into her sixth T20 World Cup and has been the team’s best batsman across all formats, having scored 75 runs in four innings during the last edition.
Will India surpass Australia and South Africa?
Harmanpreet Kaur and her girls will take on arch-rivals Pakistan in the opening match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 on June 14. Last time they managed to secure just two wins in 2024, they would look to bounce back.
In addition to Pakistan, the Women in Blue have Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh and the Netherlands in their group. This group looks quite fascinating and is expected to be a group to die for.
India schedule for Women’s T20 World Cup 2026
We have a plan- Harmanpreet Kaur
Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh will lead the batting line-up, along with their captain Harmanpreet Kaur. They have a fairly new bowling attack with Deepti Sharma and Renuka Singh, who will have to shoulder more bowling responsibilities. Kashvee Gautam and Amanjot Kaur were not available for selection due to injuries.
Talking about his WC T20 plan, Harmanpreet said, “I feel that in T20s, the powerplay is very important, if you are batting, you have to aim for runs. If you are bowling, you have to get a couple of wickets in that phase. We want to work very hard for the powerplay and also for the middle order as that also plays an important role. We have a plan and the learning that we got from SA.”
Harmanpreet said, “Amanjot is our key player, she is not available. She is away from cricket for 4-5 months. It was difficult to find someone like her, but we are trying. She got opportunities. We have Radha back in the team, she is also an all-rounder. It was difficult to find a replacement for Amanjot. We are trying to balance the team.”
