Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians suffered another defeat in the ongoing IPL 2024 as Lucknow Super Giants defeated them by four wickets on Tuesday (April 30).
The defeat was MI’s seventh of the season in ten games and their chances of making the playoffs are extremely slim now, even if they win the remaining four league games. Currently, they are languishing at ninth place in the IPL 2024 points table with just three wins and seven losses.
Summary of the match in summary:
When asked to bat first, the five-time champions got off to a disastrous start as they lost four wickets for just 27 runs in the powerplay. Players like Rohit Sharma (4), Suryakumar Yadav (10), Tilak Varma (7) and Hardik Pandya (0) failed to get going with the bat.
Players like Ishan Kishan (32), Nehal Wadhera (46) and Tim David (35*) helped the Mumbai-based team post a respectable if modest total of 144 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs. In response, LSG chased down the total in 19.2 overs.
After Marcus Stoinis’ 62-run knock set the stage for the chase, LSG stuttered towards the end but Nicholas Pooran held firm at one end and took his team home comfortably in the end.
Hardik Pandya heavily fined:
After the loss, Hardik Pandya was also heavily fined for the slow overrating of his team’s offense. In a statement, the IPL confirmed that the MI captain has been fined a whopping Rs 24 lakh for his team’s failure to complete the overs in the allotted time. This is the second time that Hardik Pandya has been fined for slow over-rate in the ongoing IPL 2024.
Earlier this season, he was fined Rs 12 lakh for his team’s excessive slow attack against Punjab Kings. In addition to the captain, the other members of the eleven, including the impact player, were also fined. Each player was fined Rs 6 lakh or 25% of his individual match fees, whichever is less.
“Mr. Hardik Pandya, captain of Mumbai Indians, has been fined after his team maintained slow over-rating during the 48th match of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Lucknow Super Giants at the Cricket Stadium Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Lucknow on April 30, 2024.” the IPL statement said.
“As it was his team’s second violation of the season under the IPL Code of Conduct relating to minimum violations of overrating, Pandya was fined INR 24 Lac. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined INR 6 Lac or 25 percent of their respective match fees, whichever is less,” he added.
MI will be in action next Friday (May 3) when they take on Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium.
