Chennai Super Kings (CSK) put up a complete performance to defeat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by seven wickets in the 22nd match of the ongoing IPL 2024.
Chasing 138, the five-time IPL champions crossed the finish line in the 18th over to get back to winning ways after losing their last two games. CSK got off to a poor start as Vaibhav Arora dismissed opener Rachin Ravindra for 15 in the fourth over. However, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad scored an unbeaten 67 and stayed on till the end to take his team home.
He shared a crucial 70-run stand with Daryl Mitchell for the second wicket. Sunil Narine broke the stand by dismissing Mitchell for 25 runs in the 13th over. Gaikwad and Shivam Dube virtually sealed the game for their team by adding 38 runs for the third wicket. With just three runs remaining, Arora dismissed Dube for 18 before Gaikwad and MS Dhoni took CSK home.
Earlier in the game, Ruturaj Gaikwad’s decision to bowl first was fully justified by the CSK players as they restricted KKR to a modest 137/9. Having scored 208, 186 and 272 runs in their last three games, KKR couldn’t really get into the rhythm against CSK.
Tushar Deshpande dismissed Phil Salt for a duck on the first ball of the game before Sunil Narine and Angkrish Raghuvanshi added 56 runs for the second wicket. And once Ravindra Jadeja dismissed both batsmen in the seventh over to reduce KKR to 60 for 3, the two-time champions simply could not recover.
They kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Even players like Rinku Singh (9) and Andre Russell (10) could not get the team out of trouble. Captain Shreyas Iyer was his team’s top scorer with 34 and was the only KKR batsman to score more than 25 runs. For CSK, Jadeja and Deshpande starred in the ball, taking three wickets each.

KKR remains in second place in the points table with 3 wins in four matches. On the contrary, CSK is in fourth place. Rajasthan Royals are currently on top with four wins in as many games.
