TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, match number 44, was among the two most successful teams in the competition, with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) hosting Mumbai Indians (MI) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. CSK did a double over the Mumbai Indians, beating them by 8 wickets that night and keeping their playoff hopes alive.

MI captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bat first in a must-win game. The Blues made two changes, with the entry of Krish Bhagat and Raghu Sharma, who made his debut for the five-time winners. CSK also made a couple of changes, with the debut of Ramakrishna Ghosh and the entry of Prashant Veer.

While batting first, Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks did not get off to the best start as the latter was dismissed for 1 run. After that, Rickelton took over along with Naman Dhir. MI scored 57/1 in the powerplay, and then the former scored aggressively and was dismissed for 37 off 24 balls by Noor Ahmad.

Suryakumar Yadav and Naman then formed a partnership but SKY’s poor form continued as after starting, he failed to convert into a big score and was dismissed by debutant Ramakrishna Ghosh for 21 runs. Then it was Tilak Varma who did not trouble the CSK players and returned with 8 runs.

Naman Dhir scored a fifty off 34 balls and was stuck at one end as wickets continued to fall. But he also came back after scoring 57 off 35 balls. Captain Pandya never got going as he was struggling and fell back by 18 runs. MI finished with a score of 159/7 in their 20 overs.

Coming out in chase, Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad got off to a decent start, but the former, whose catch was dropped by Will Jacks in Jasprit Bumrah’s first over, came back after scoring 11 runs off the last ball of the over, with Rickelton taking the catch.

Then a small aggressive innings from Urvil Patel, 24 off 12 runs, kept the current run rate and required run rate within the nearest margin. Kartik Sharma and Gaikward then formed a fifty-run partnership, with the latter also bringing up his half-century in 34 balls; It was his fifty in a row this season. Ruturaj and Kartik remained undefeated with scores of 67* and 54*.
