Jay Shah and Virat Kohli

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah congratulated star batsman Virat Kohli on his 16th anniversary in international cricket. Jay Shah praised Virat Kohli for his legendary cricketing career as the former Indian captain continues to contribute to the Indian national cricket team.

Virat Kohli was considered one of the most promising players in the nation after leading the team to victory in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup. He made his international debut in an ODI against Sri Lanka on 18 August 2008. Since then, he has lived up to expectations and has played many notable innings for India.

The Delhi batsman has established himself as one of the best all-rounders across formats thanks to his passion, consistency and skill. Kohli has also made a significant impact as a captain across formats. The right-handed batsman has broken many records as a player and captain in international cricket.

A Truly Legendary Career – Jay Shah

Jay Shah took to social media account X (formerly known as Twitter) to congratulate Virat Kohli on his 16th anniversary in international cricket. Shah highlighted that Kohli has had a legendary career since his debut at the age of 19.

“16 years ago today, 19-year-old @imVkohli stepped onto the international stage for the first time, marking the beginning of what has become a truly legendary career. Congratulations to the King on completing 16 years in international cricket!” Jay Shah wrote on X.

The 35-year-old was last seen in action during the ODI series against Sri Lanka earlier this month. The veteran batsman played a match-winning knock during the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa. He was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his impressive batting performance in the summit clash.

Virat Kohli rested for the 2024 Duleep Trophy season

Virat Kohli is India’s second-highest run-scorer in international cricket. He has scored 26,942 runs, including 80 hundreds and 140 fifties. In total, he is behind Sachin Tendulkar (34,357), Kumar Sangakkara (28,016) and Ricky Ponting (27,483). Kohli also holds the record for the most hundreds (50) in ODIs.

Kohli and Rohit Sharma will not be involved in the upcoming Duleep Trophy ahead of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said giving rest to these senior players is a precautionary measure ahead of the busy Test season, including the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT).

We will see him in action again during the two-match Test series against Bangladesh at home. The Rohit Sharma-led side will play the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, starting from September 19. The second and final Test will be played at Green Park in Kanpur from September 27 to October 1.

Virat Kohli has scored 437 runs in six Test matches against Bangladesh, averaging 54.62 and scoring two centuries. He needs 152 more runs to reach 9,000 runs in the longest format of the game.
