KKR full squad, team list and player list after IPL 2024 auction

KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders) released 12 players ahead of the IPL 2024 auction. They needed to fill the maximum number of slots, including the maximum number of foreign players (4). KKR, MI and DC needed four foreign players.

Knight Riders had a remaining purse of Rs 32.7 million, which was the second highest after SRH’s Rs 34 million. KKR released a large number of national and international players who are looking to renew their squad in the IPL 2024 Auction.

KKR finished seventh in IPL 2023 with six wins and eight losses. They were led by Nitish Rana in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who was ruled out with a shoulder injury. Iyer will return as captain of the franchise in IPL 2023 and Rana will be the deputy to him. This was recently confirmed by the Kolkata Knight Riders management.

Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, his loyal war horses, were retained along with Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Venkatesh Iyer, Rinku Singh and Nitish Rana along with Captain Shreyas Iyer. The Knight Riders management was very clear in reappointing Shreyas Iyer as their full-time captain and Rana had no problem with that. He also said that he is happy to play as a substitute. KKR has a good core of Indian batsmen and needs a good core of Indian bowlers as well as especially experienced seamers.

Among the released players are Shakib Al Hasan, Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, Umesh Yadav and Shardul Thakur. The release of Thakur and Umesh meant that the franchise needed specialized Indian seamers. They also needed pace options abroad heading into the auction.

KKR reached the final of IPL 2021 but then failed to play with the same intensity in the next two seasons. This time, the management has roped in Gautam Gambhir as the team’s mentor ahead of the IPL 2024 auction.

The former KKR captain was excited about his return to the franchise he led from 2011 to 2017. He also won two titles with them in 2012 and 2014. Gambhir’s appointment was made keeping in mind the long-term prospects of the team.

He was an inspiring figure in the Lucknow Super Giants camp, leading them to knockouts in two consecutive seasons. The KKR management hopes that he will also turn things around with the Knight Riders and help them win their first IPL title in a decade.

KKR needed to strengthen their Indian pace attack and include some big foreign names in the auction when only four foreign slots were left. They also needed a backup wicketkeeper for Gurbaz, preferably an Indian who could also contribute with the bat.
