Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) held their nerve to win a last-ball thriller against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the just-concluded 36th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 (IPL 2024) at Eden Gardens.

RCB’s chances of winning the game seemed done and dusted after Andre Russell dismissed Dinesh Karthik on the last ball of the 19th over. In the last over, the visitors needed to score 21 runs with just two wickets in hand. With Mitchell Starc pitching the final, not many expected a close finish. RCB, however, almost won the game thanks to an impressive cameo by Karn Sharma, but ultimately fell short by just one run.

Batting for the first time this season, Karn Sharma hit three sixes in the first four balls of Starc’s over to reduce the equation to 3 off the last two balls. On the fifth ball of the over, he hit it straight back to Starc and the KKR pacer took a strong catch to turn the game around.

With three runs needed on the last ball of the over, Lockie Ferguson hit Starc’s delivery towards deep extra cover. Ferguson and his teammate Mohammed Siraj completed the first race and quickly set off for the second. The fielder failed to get a good shot off when he launched the ball wide of goalkeeper Phil Salt.

However, the England keeper did well to collect the ball and removed the balls in an instant before Ferguson could complete the second run.

Earlier in the game, KKR finished their innings on 222 for 6 after being asked to bat first. Captain Shreyas Iyer was the hosts’ top scorer, scoring 50 off 36 balls, while Salt scored 48 runs off just 14 balls.

In response, RCB had raced to 137 for 2 after just 11 overs thanks to quick fifties from Will Jacks and Rajat Patidar before failing to capitalize on their strong stand. KKR now have five wins in seven matches this season, while RCB have only won one of their eight matches.
