Delhi Capitals, on Tuesday (May 14), thrashed Lucknow Super Giants by 19 runs to keep their playoff hopes alive. With a target of 209 runs, LSG finished their innings at 189 for 9.

When asked to bat first, DC finished their innings with 208 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs. The hosts got off to a disastrous start when the in-form Jake Fraser-McGurk was dismissed for a duck in the first over by Arshad Khan. However, Abishek Porel and Tristan Stubbs scored good fifties to propel DC to a big total in the must-win clash.

In response, LSG finished their innings at 189 for 9 in 20 overs. At one point, they were reeling at 44 for 4 and then 71 for 5 before a 20-ball fifty from Nicholas Pooran revived their hopes. The West Indies star, however, departed for 61 runs in the 12th over to leave his team six down for 101.

It looked like LSG were made up at that point, but Arshad Khan revived his team’s hopes once again by smashing a whirlwind fifty. However, he could not finish the job for his team as LSG fell short by 19 runs and suffered their third consecutive defeat.

Qualification scenario for LSG after the defeat against DC:

LSG’s chances of qualifying for the playoffs hang by a thin thread after the defeat against DC. They are currently in seventh place in the points table with 12 points from 13 games. With this defeat, LSG can finish the league phase with a maximum of 14 points.

To qualify for the next phase, LSG will have to win their last match at any cost. Anything less than a win will eliminate them from the tournament. Victory, however, will not be enough for a place in the last four, as they will have to depend on other results.

Not only do they need to win the last league match against Mumbai Indians, but they will also have to improve their net return rate. Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals have already qualified.

Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals have 14 points each, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru can also finish with 14 points.

For LSG to qualify, they will need SRH to lose the remaining games by huge margins to also finish with 14 points and their net run rate take a beating. LSG will also need CSK to defeat RCB. In that case, if LSG wins its last match, it will be tied on 14 points with SRH and DC. Net run rate will decide the fourth team for the playoffs.
