Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has slammed PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi after the latter claimed that he will take further steps in cricket in the country after following suggestions from advisors.

The advisors are believed to be some of Pakistan’s former cricketers and head coach of the cricket league Gary Kirsten. After Pakistan’s dismal performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup, there has been talk of some radical changes in the country’s cricket.

During an interaction with the media, Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was asked about the measures that are likely to be taken to improve Pakistani cricket. Naqvi responded by saying that he would take advice from some former cricketers and Gary Kirsten.

“Mohsin Naqvi’s advisors are incompetent” – Shahid Afridi

According to a well-known sports journalist of Pakistan, Shahid Afridi, the PCB chairman will not be able to do anything in Pakistan cricket if he continues to listen to the advisers. He even claimed that his advisers have no idea about cricket and are incompetent.

“PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi will not be able to do anything if he runs the PCB based on the suggestions of the advisors because the PCB Chairman’s advisors are incompetent and have no knowledge of cricket,” Shahid Afridi was quoted as saying by Geo News journalist Arfa Feroz Zake.

Afridi did not stop there and even asked Mohsin Naqvi to take up a job at a time. Mohsin Naqvi is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister and Chairman of the PCB.

“Mohsin Naqvi is the Home Minister and Chairman of PCB. It is the right time for him to choose a job!” Afridi was quoted as saying by Arfa Feroz Zake.

Bad times for cricket in Pakistan

Pakistan cricket is going through a very difficult time. They were eliminated from the 2024 T20 World Cup after losing their first two matches to the USA and India. The loss to the USA was particularly shocking given the difference in experience between the two teams.

Despite winning their last two matches against Canada and Ireland, Pakistan finished with four points to second-placed USA’s five. As a result, they failed to advance to the Super 8 stage.

Since then, the Men in Green have been widely criticised by the country’s former cricketers and cricket pundits across the world. Pakistan captain Babar Azam is also under huge pressure and his captaincy is hanging by a thread. Pakistan’s next task is the two-match home Test series against Bangladesh. Before that, the PCB is expected to release the new central contract list in which massive changes are expected, one of the major ones being the promotion of speedster Naseem Shah to the A category.
