Former Australian batting legend and three-time ICC Cricket World Cup winner Ricky Ponting opted not to use the youngster’s name. Cameron Green and said a clear no when asked if the All-Rounder would become David Warner’s possible long-term replacement after he retired from Test cricket.
The 37-year-old explosive left-handed batsman is taking part in his final Test series against Pakistan at home in a 3-match Test series in which Australia has already achieved a 1-0 lead. The second Test is currently being played at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground with Steve Smith and Mitchell Marsh in the box for the final session of Day 3.
Warner laid the foundation for an Australian victory in Perth by 360 runs after scoring 164 runs that helped Australia post a first innings total of 487. In response, Pakistan had scored 271 in the second innings while the hosts declared 233 runs in the third innings.
Pakistan were given a target of 450 runs but the Australian bowling line-up bowled them out for just 89 runs with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood picking 3 wickets each while Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon accounted for 2 and 1 wickets respectively.
While Australia appear on course to win the second Test as well, the main question before them is who will be David Warner’s long-term replacement after the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground starting January 3. Among the names reported by Australian media is 24-year-old all-rounder Cameron Green, who made his Test debut in 2020 in Adelaide against Virat Kohli’s India.
Cameron Green has since played 23 Test matches, including 2 Ashes series, both home and away. He stood out, especially during the 2022 Ashes Series at home, where he scored 228 in 4 Tests and 7 innings. It was in that same series when his batting underwent a minor tweak after Ricky Ponting criticized his technique.
Ponting claimed midway through the series that Cameron Green was unable to make big runs because his pre-ball trigger motion was incorrect and that he was more focused on avoiding losing his wicket to LBW. Green had followed Ponting’s advice and the all-rounder himself claimed that he had helped him.
However, Ponting did not approve of his name at all when asked if Green could be a long-term replacement for Warner with the two-time World Cup winner as Captain, saying it was time for the selectors to continue searching for a new opener.
“There is no chance (in Green’s name). “It’s time to go back and find Australia’s next best opening batsman with the India Test and Ashes series in mind.” – Ponting said.
Ricky Ponting backs Cameron Bancroft as favorite to replace Warner long-term
Ricky Ponting, while speaking to a local outlet in Australia, backed Cameron Bancroft as the best possible replacement for David Warner in the long term. At the moment, Bancroft’s name is in discussion alongside Matt Renshaw and Marcus Harris to fill the starting spot Warner has held since 2011 for next year’s two-match Test series against the West Indies at home.
Ponting believes Bancroft has the best chance of making the cut, given his top-class performances domestically since the last two seasons have been nothing short of sensational. He was the leading run-scorer in Sheffield Shield last year, scoring 945 runs at an average of 59.06 and is also the leading run-scorer for the current season with 512 runs.
“If you look at those three guys, I think it’s pretty clear that Bancroft is the one with the runs on the board and I wouldn’t be surprised if they (the selectors) went that route.” – said Ricky Ponting.
