Former Australian cricketer Allan Border had some disappointing news for fans on Friday (June 30). He revealed that he has Parkinson’s disease, a progressive disorder of the nervous system. He confirmed the development to Newscorp.

Allan Border revealed that he was diagnosed with the disease in 2016 but did not tell anyone. He will soon be 68 years old. He recalled that when he entered the neurosurgeon’s room back then he noticed the moment from him and told him directly.

Allan Border said he didn’t tell anyone because he’s a private person and he didn’t want anyone to feel sorry for him. He narrated:

“I went in to the neurosurgeon and he said straight to me: ‘I’m sorry to break it to you, but you have Parkinson’s. Just like you came in. Your arms down by your side, hanging, not swinging. He could only say it.

“I’m a pretty private person and I didn’t want people to feel sorry for me. If people care about you, you don’t know it. But I know there will come a day when people will notice. I have the feeling that I am much better than most.

Allan Border further said that he is not afraid of the disease. He cheekily said that this time he won’t be able to make another hundred. He added that if he makes it to 80, it will be a miracle. He explained:

“At the moment I’m not scared, not about the immediate future anyway. I am 68 years old. If I turn 80, it will be a miracle. I have a doctor friend and I told him if I make it to 80 it will be a miracle, and he said, ‘It will be a miracle. No way am I getting another 100, that’s for sure. I will glide slowly to the west.

Allan Border has been one of the best cricketers to have ever played the game of cricket for Australia. He won many games for his side with impressive performances from him.

He played 156 Tests and was the first batsman to score 11,000 runs and finished with 11,174 for his career. He also led Australia to victory in the 1987 World Cup and played 273 games in the 50+ format. Since he retired, he has served as Australia’s coach and broadcast commentator.
