Lyon is considered the greatest player to have represented the Australian national cricket team in the purest format of the game. He and the late great Shane Warne are two of Australia’s greatest spinners to have set foot on the international cricket field and single-handedly won many matches for the Australians.
Lyon, who is currently 36 years old, has reached the historic milestone of 500 wickets in Test cricket. He achieved the feat in the home test match against the Pakistan national cricket team at Perth Stadium on Sunday, December 17.
He would have entered the elite club earlier in the year, when longtime rivals Australia and England met in the 2023 Ashes. However, an injury ruled him out of the series and delayed his historic achievement.
Lyon was heading into the Test series against the Shan Masood-led team with an eye on the milestone of 500 Test wickets and managed to achieve it after dismissing all-rounder Faheem Ashraf on the fourth day after winning the lbw review.
The Australian bowling great was elated after completing 500 wickets in the longest format of the game. He became the eighth bowler in history and overall the third Australian after Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath to reach the milestone.

When Lyon achieved the huge milestone against Ravichandran Ashwin, the latter took his official X to convey his reaction. He praised Lyon as the ‘GOAT’ and congratulated him for joining the elite club.

Not only Ashwin but legendary Indian national cricket team player Anil Kumble also congratulated Lyon on his fantastic achievement.

Talking about the first Test between Australia and Pakistan, the Pat Cummins-led team absolutely crushed the visitors to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
While batting, they scored 487 and 233/5d on the board in their two innings and then bowled out the opposition for 271 and 89 to achieve a remarkable 360-run victory.
