Former Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram is one of the legends of his time and has dismissed many big names in world cricket with his swing and pace. Akram, also known as the ‘Sultan of Swing’, who is part of the commentary team for the AUS vs PAK Test series, spoke about a fun experience he faced at the ‘Melbourne Cricket Ground’.
‘Bay 13’ is one of the most chaotic and lively areas of the world’s second largest cricket stadium, MCG, and the crowd is often seen cheering for their team and spectators also pushing the opposing players.
As Pakistan chased 317 in the fourth innings, Wasim Akram shared the funniest incident of his life. On Day 4, while explaining the incident, Wasim revealed that it was early in Australia for him and he was not used to the Australian accent.
Wasim Akram had completed his fiftieth in the 1989 tour of Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. As soon as Wasim reached the milestone, the ‘Bay 13’ crowd started chanting, “Wasim is a W@@@@R.”

While Wasim Akram couldn’t say the word in the comment box, his fellow commentator asked him if it rhymed with ‘Banker’, to which he replied ‘Yes’.
However, earlier Wasim Akram could not understand what the crowd was saying and thought they were praising him. However, it was the then Pakistani captain Imran Khan, who made him understand what the word meant.
Wasim Akram said: “At that time, I couldn’t understand the Australian accent because it was my first days in Australia. So I was very happy and greeted them. And then Imran approached me, my captain. He said you know what they’re saying. I said yes, they say you’re a good player. Imran said no, they are saying you are a ‘whore’.”
Australia has always been a place where fights and sledging on the cricket field are very common. The Australians try to play various mind games with the opposing team to take them down and win the match.
Indian batsman Virat Kohli has been Australia’s biggest victim of sledging, but he has also given it back to the public and players with equal passion. This is one reason why any Australian player thinks twice before messing with Virat Kohli.
Coming back to the second Test of AUS vs PAK, the Australian team was able to register a 79-run win against Pakistan as it was captain Pat Cummins’ ten-wicket haul, which played a major role in Australia’s victory.
Pat Cummins picked up fifes in both innings and once again it was Pakistan’s batting failure that resulted in another defeat for them. Pakistan are yet to win a Test in Australia since 1995 and the run is 16-0.
The Australian team will want to end the Test series on a winning note and whitewash Pakistan 3-0, while Pakistan would still be looking for their first Test victory in Australia after 1995.
