Virat Kohli, on Saturday (May 4), came to the on-field umpire’s rescue and reminded him to signal an open during the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
The incident took place in the seventh over when Vijaykumar Vyshak was bowling to David Miller. For the fourth ball of the over, the pacer bowled one down the leg side. Miller tried to play inside but couldn’t make any good contact. The ball went very close to the gloves before goalkeeper Dinesh Karthik caught it.
The RCB players came up in unison, calling for a caught backline. However, the umpire gave his decision in favor of the batsman. RCB were convinced that Miller had overshot the ball and reviewed the umpire’s decision.
Replays, however, showed that the on-field umpire was right and that the ball had not made any contact with the bat or gloves before being caught by Karthik. And as the umpire signaled that it was not out, Virat Kohli reminded him to also signal wide. The former RCB captain stood close to Karthik with both his arms extended to remind the umpire about the width.
Talking about the game, RCB’s bowlers put up an excellent display by bowling GT for 147 after their captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and opted to bowl first. At one stage, GT was reeling at 19 for 3 before Miller and Shahrukh Khan steadied the ship with a 61-run stand.
Both batsmen then departed in quick succession to leave their team five down for 87 in the 13th over. Rahul Tewati’s 35-run knock and useful cameos from the lower order batsmen helped GT cross the 140-run mark. For RCB, Mohammed Siraj, Yash Dayal and Vijaykumar got two wickets each.
