Ahead of Mumbai Indians’ upcoming IPL 2026 match against Lucknow Super Giants on Monday, May 4, former captain Rohit Sharma was involved in a new incident. The incident occurred during MI’s net practice session at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, May 3.

During the session, it was reported that Rohit had accidentally hit a fielder while practicing one of his shots. Injured groundskeeper Siban Biswas spoke to Mid-Day about the incident.

“When Rohit Sharma sir told us to remove the offside net, we did so and stood aside. Just then, while I was winding the rope and not paying attention to the players standing nearby, the ball hit me on my left knee.”

“Rohit sir immediately came and inquired about the injury, but I told him to continue batting and not to bother. However, he returned with an ice pack and also sent someone to give me medicine and spray to put on my leg,” said 27-year-old Biswas. ““It was mixed feelings…although my knee hurt, I also feel good because I shook hands with Rohit sir,” Biswas added.

Rohit Sharma misses many games due to injury

Rohit started the season strong with a sublime 78 against the Kolkata Knight Riders, but he has only been able to play in 4 matches. During the fourth match, against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 12, Rohit Sharma injured his toe and had to leave the field. A hamstring injury has since delayed his return to the field.

So far, Rohit has made 137 runs in 4 matches at an average of 45.67 and a strike rate of 165 with a fifty and a high score of 78. In his absence, MI have failed to find stability in the top flight by trying three different starting pairings in five matches since he left.

Mumbai Indians are in poor form in IPL 2026

Not just in their opening, Mumbai Indians have been struggling in all departments in IPL 2026. With just 2 wins in 9 matches, they are last in the points table.

Most of their big stars like Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya are not fit. This has resulted in Mumbai Indians’ playoff hopes being completely shattered.

MI now has a non-negligible chance of qualifying for the playoffs, even if they win all their matches from here. The series of losses has forced its net run rate to also take a serious hit.

Mumbai Indians next game

MI is currently on a three-match losing streak. On May 4, they will take on 10th-ranked Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

LSG itself is struggling this season, with 2 wins in 8 games and the worst net return rate in the league. The Rishabh Pant-led team is currently on a five-match losing streak. MI vs LSG is likely to be a clash to avoid 10th place rather than one to bolster either team’s playoff chances.
