Former Pakistan Captain Mohammad Hafeez is reportedly in line to become Pakistan’s new chief selector. According to media reports, the former all-rounder could take over after the conclusion of Pakistan’s ongoing tour of Sri Lanka.
Babar Azam & Co. are currently on the island for a two-test series. Pakistan has started the tour on a winning note. They beat Sri Lanka by four wickets in the series opener in Galle to take an unassailable lead in the two match series.

According to PTI reports, Mohammad Hafeez is the preferred candidate of the recently appointed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Zaka Ashraf. Pakistan’s chief selector position has been vacant since PCB’s previous Cricket Management Committee (CMC) was dissolved in June this year.
The report stated that Zaka recently met with Mohammad Hafeez and Rashid Latif. Latif, however, rejected the offer, saying he is not ready to take on the role of Pakistan’s head of national team. Mohammad Hafeez, however, expressed his desire to become the chief selector.
“Zaka met with former captain Rashid Latif and Hafeez and talked to them about becoming head of the team. Rashid was not interested in the job, but Hafeez (has) expressed the availability of him for the job”, a source told PTI.
“Rashid was more interested in working on anti-corruption issues. Hafeez, who played 55 Tests, 218 ODIs and 119 T20Is for Pakistan before retiring last year, made it clear that he would like the challenge of working as head of team.” added the source.
Mohammad Hafeez is unlikely to have any new selectors on the panel:
Should Mohammad Hafeez become head selector, it is unlikely that he will have new selectors on the panel. The previous PCB CMC had appointed Haroon Rasheed as head of the selection panel which includes team manager Mickey Arthur and head coach Grant Bradburn. But while Rasheed is unlikely to continue in his role, the other selectors are ready to continue.
“But with the dissolution of the previous CMC, technically Haroon Rasheed is no longer the chair of the selection committee.” said the source.
“It is unlikely that the entire selection committee will be changed due to the Pakistan team’s tight schedule after the Sri Lanka tour, as Afghanistan also confirmed an ODI series in Sri Lanka in August ahead of the Asian Cup.” added.
