Umran Malik of Sunrisers Hyderabad

Umran MalikThe young and fiery runner from Jammu and Kashmir, has been part of the core of the Hyderabad Sunrises (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Recognising his raw talent and potential, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) gave Malik a platform to showcase his talent on the big stage of the IPL.

Malik began his journey with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2021, and his blistering pace immediately caught the attention of cricket pundits and fans. The 24-year-old, known for his blistering pace and consistently hitting speeds of over 150 km/h, has quickly risen through the ranks and earned a reputation as one of the fastest bowlers in the world.

Umran Malik’s IPL future in jeopardy with SRH’s possible bold decision

Malik’s breakthrough season came in 2022, when he emerged as one of the IPL’s most exciting young talents, finishing with 22 wickets in 14 games for the SRH. His outstanding performance earned him a maiden call-up to the Indian cricket team, but after a few opportunities, he failed to live up to expectations.

Meanwhile, Umran’s form has seen a major decline in the past few seasons as the speedster picked up just five wickets in eight games in the 2023 season while he managed just one match in the IPL 2024 under the captaincy of Pat Cummins for SRH, who lost the final to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) earlier this year.

Umran Malik likely to be released by SRH ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction

Now, News24 Sports claims that SRH is considering releasing Umran ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction later this year. With the youngster’s line, length and poor economy having been the talk of the town in the last few seasons, SRH is looking to rebuild in the mega auction, and that is why the franchise is likely to release the Jammu and Kashmir pace sensation.

The report also claimed that many IPL teams have shown interest in Umran after it emerged that the SRH is likely to release the Indian player ahead of the 2025 IPL mega auction. He will certainly be one of the most attractive options if it goes up for auction later this year.

From being hailed as one of India’s most promising fast bowling talents to struggling to find a place even in the B team and even being on the verge of losing his IPL squad, Malik’s journey has seen a surprising downturn. He represented India in 10 ODIs and 8 T20Is, where he picked up 13 and 11 wickets respectively, after making his debut in 2022.

His IPL franchise had made him a household name but SRH too lost faith in his abilities, gave him just one match in IPL 2024 and is now planning to release him. However, Paras Mhambrey, a former Indian bowling coach who won the 2024 T20 World Cup last month, suggested that Malik should consider playing domestic cricket in a different state to regain his form and standing in the cricketing world.
