Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has announced that the state government is planning to build a new international cricket stadium near Hyderabad. Revanth Reddy confirmed that the government has initiated talks with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the construction of the stadium.
The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium is located in Hyderabad. The stadium first hosted an international match between India and South Africa in 2005. It has been the home stadium of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL). It was also the home ground of the defunct Deccan Chargers franchise.
The Hyderabad Cricket Association won the award for the best ground and pitch in IPL 2019. The stadium received the same award again in IPL 2024. Sunrisers Hyderabad set a record with the highest team total at the stadium, scoring 277/3 against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024. SRH then surpassed this record with 287/3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Bengaluru.

Addressing the State Assembly, Revanth Reddy said that preliminary talks with the BCCI for a new cricket stadium on the outskirts of Hyderabad have been completed. Revanth said that the stadium will be built near Begarikancha village in Kandukur Mandal of Rangareddy district.
“We want to implement the best sports policy. We are studying the policies of various states and Haryana has the best sports policy,” the Chief Minister said in the assembly.
“The state government is holding talks with the BCCI in this regard and preliminary talks have already been completed. The BCCI has offered to build one of the best international cricket stadiums. The state government will allot land near Begarikancha village in Kandukur mandal in Rangareddy district in the vicinity of the proposed skill college,” he added.
The Telangana state government has allotted 600 sq m of land to shooter Esha Singh, boxer Nikhat Zareen and cricketer Mohammed Siraj to encourage youth participation in sports. Mohammed Siraj was honoured by the Chief Minister on his return to his hometown after the 2024 T20 World Cup victory.
SunRisers Hyderabad lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in the final of IPL 2024
SunRisers Hyderabad made it to the final match of the 2024 Indian Premier League. However, the Pat Cummins-led side suffered a heavy defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 26. SRH could manage only 113 runs and KKR won the match by eight wickets.
SRH played with an aggressive batting approach throughout the tournament. Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen and emerging Indian talents like Abhishek Sharma and Nitish Kumar Reddy delivered crucial performances. SRH faces challenges with player retention ahead of the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction.
