There have been a lot of rumors about MS Dhoni and his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Initially, he was supposed to play his last IPL match when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their last league match in 2024.

However, a new update has been developed regarding his future in the tournament and Dhoni could return again for the 2025 edition. He could play as an unlimited player in the upcoming season as the BCCI has decided to reinstate the unlimited player rule that was eliminated a few years ago.

According to this regulation, a player who has not featured in the playing eleven or who does not have a central contract for five or more years can be treated as an uncapped player. The salary cap for uncapped players is INR 4 crore.

The rule appears to have been reintroduced specifically for MS Dhoni as it will allow CSK to utilize Dhoni’s services without wasting a holding slot. It’s a win-win situation as they have no one other than Sameer Rizvi to use the uncapped spot, and each team can retain two uncapped players before the auction or use RTM during the auction.

Mohammad Kaif believes rules will keep changing until MS Dhoni wants to play

On Star Sports, Mohammad Kaif said that Dhoni is fit and playing aggressively and we will see him play next season. He feels the rules will change as long as MS wants to continue.

“We will see MS Dhoni play again. He is fit, bats aggressively and is also good behind the gloves. As long as you want to play, the rules will continue to change. You have to change the rules or do whatever you want, let MS Dhoni play if he wants to play, he is a great player and a match-winner for CSK.”

Dhoni has been the face of the league. He has played in all editions of the league and played an important role in making CSK the most successful team.

He has won five titles as leader of the Yellow Army and is the most successful captain in the league. His inclusion will greatly increase the TRP of the league.
