Former India opener Virender Sehwag sent a warning to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to score runs against Australia in Super 8 tonight.
If Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma don’t end up scoring big tonight and in the upcoming matches, Sehwag believes questions will arise. Those questions will not only be limited to Virat and Rohit but will also extend to the boss’s selection committee.
So far in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s bats have remained quiet. The duo, playing as the opening pair for the first time in an ICC event, have struggled to get going in the slow and uncomfortable conditions on offer. It will be fair to say that it has not been the easiest tournament to score runs.
While Rohit Sharma scored a combined 99 runs in the tournament in 5 matches, Virat Kohli could only accumulate 66 runs. Rohit’s highest score came against Ireland in the opening group match, in which he scored 52*, but he did not suffer any notable knock afterwards. Except for the quick hit against Bangladesh.
As for Virat Kohli, he scored 5 runs in the 3 Group A matches against Ireland, Pakistan and the United States. In Super 8, he scored a combined 66 runs in the matches against Afghanistan and Bangladesh. In the last match he recorded his highest tally of the tournament when he amassed 37 runs at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium.
If India wants to win the T20 world championship, then both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma must fire from the top order. Extravagant knocks of 30 off 10 or 40 off 20 won’t do alone as the duo should think about extending their innings. If that happens, the Indian team will benefit immensely and their chances of finally winning an ICC trophy will also be possible.
Virat and Rohit’s lack of runs led Sehwag to say that they should appear on the scoresheet, otherwise they will be scrutinised.
“This is a cause for concern because none of the openers have scored runs. Rohit scored 50 and Kohli had 24. So no matter how much we say that they are great players, but in the end they will have to score runs. If they can’t, the selectors will have to think after the World Cup,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
What did Virender Sehwag say?
While speaking to Cricbuzz recently, Virender Sehwag highlighted that the Indian team has not really been tested in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Except for the match against Pakistan, Viru feels that they have not been challenged as such and the real task will be against The Australians.
Virender Sehwag then said that India could suffer for not initially facing a competitive team in the tournament that could test their skills. He was also a little unsure about India’s chances of reaching the T20 World Cup final and said the toughest situations will be against England and Australia.
“You haven’t played a single match except Pakistan where you have been tested. You haven’t played a match where you are worried about your top and middle order batsmen scoring runs. That situation hasn’t come yet, but it will come.” .will come on Monday and then on the 27th. As that situation is yet to come, that’s why things are moving,” Virender Sehwag concluded.
