Bangladesh batter Towhid Hridoy slapped fined for breach of code of conduct against Sri Lanka

Bangladesh batsman Towhid Hridoy was fined 15 per cent of his match fee after being charged with Level 1 breach of the ICC code of conduct in the third T20I against Sri Lanka.

Towhid Hridoy looked agitated after his dismissal in the fourth over of Bangladesh’s chase. Nuwan Untilara took his first hat-trick of the T20I by dismissing Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, Hridoy and Mahmudullah in consecutive deliveries.

Untilara was helped by the low bounce of the Sylhet court as the entire ball ended up making the batsmen tremble. Bangladesh eventually lost the game by 28 runs. The team was bowled out for 146 in 19.4 overs and Untila finished with 5/20. Captain Wanindu Hasaranga took two wickets, while Maheesh Theekshana and Dasun Shanaka took one each.

Meanwhile, Hridoy’s conduct breach relates to ICC Article 2.20 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to displaying conduct contrary to the spirit of the game.

The charges were filed by on-field umpires Sharfuddoula Saikat and Tanvir Ahmed, third umpire Gazi Sohel and fourth umpire Masudur Rahman. The fine was sanctioned by match referee Andy Pycrot and the Bangladesh batsman was found guilty, so there was no need for any formal hearing.

Sri Lanka won the first high-scoring T20I by three runs. Bangladesh came back in the second T20I to win it by 8 wickets and level the series. Hasaranga’s return marked another series win for Sri Lanka as they successfully defended 174 in the final ODI. Wanindu Hasaranga, the Sri Lanka captain, praised his players and especially Nuwan Untilara’s bowling efforts.

“I watched the first two games from the locker room, we played very well in all three games. In day games I trust my abilities and support myself. It was his first game of the series and he pitched very well. Our bowling attack was too good for them. This is our last series before the World Cup and we can be very confident,” Hasaranga said.

The Bangladesh captain was disappointed after the defeat. He admitted that they limited the opposition to an even total but could not win the match. However, he was satisfied with the individual performances.

“The way they started, they batted brilliantly, but we came back very well to restrict them to 174. Credit goes to Nuwan, he bowled brilliantly, but we have to look back and see how we played the first six overs. We played good cricket in all three matches, happy for Rishad. We can be very confident in this series, but ODIs are a different format, we are looking forward to it,” the Bangladesh skipper said.

Both the teams are playing a three-match ODI series and all the matches will be played in Chittagong between March 13 and 18. Then, the two teams will play the first test from March 22 to 26 and the second test from April 3 to 7.
